This section deals with the vision of the GIS Centre and the objectives required to attain such a vision. Vision The vision of the GIS Centre is to become the leader in Africa in terms of GIS research, its application and consultancy in socio-economic and human sciences. Mission To become the leader of socio-economic spatial data and services to government departments, HSRC research programmes and external stakeholders in South Africa and Africa by providing spatial information and analysis to address national and continental priorities. Objectives The following objectives will be used to achieve the mission: - Develop expertise in socio-economic pan-African priority issues
- Develop strategic socio-economic datasets in a spatial format
- Develop staff capacity in accessibility modelling
- Participate actively in KS research projects
- Develop staff capacity in small area estimation modelling
- Raise awareness of the value of GIS in research amongst internal and external stakeholders
- Promote the use of GIS applications in research projects
- Develop staff capacity in using Google Earth as an output format
- Improve support to and collaboration with HSRC research groups
- Develop appropriate information dissemination mechanisms
- Leverage the use of strategic socio-economic databases
- Facilitate the spatial analysis of data
- Grow and maintain local and African networks
- Secure external funds and establish mechanisms to ensure the sustainability of the section
- Facilitate the use of GIS methodologies and applications as well as the production of high quality GIS products
Dissemination of information The GIS Centre's consultants based in Pretoria, attend to the information needs of clients on a daily basis.
