Geographical Information Systems (GIS)

Products

The GIS Centre is engaged on an ongoing basis in the development of spatial databases. These databases are developed to meet the needs of HSRC researchers or external stakeholders. Contact the GIS Centre to obtain a list of available spatial data sets.

Description of some of the spatial databases in the GIS Centre

Crime statistics

Having mapped every police station precinct in the country, allows the GIS Centre to illustrate on a regular basis 37 crime types obtained from the South African Police Services (SAPS). Population statistics linked to the police station precincts enable the calculation of crime rates as well as the mapping of advanced crime indicators (e.g. crime density, crime share). The HSRC's GIS Centre is a world leader in providing this type of information. Crime surveys also provide detailed information on people's perceptions of crime and policing in South Africa.

School and education statistics

The HSRC has mapped the exact location of more than 33 000 schools in South Africa. Linked to each school are more than 400 education variables, which include information on learners and educators, as well as teaching facilities and their condition. It constitutes one of the most advanced data sets in South Africa and the world. Statistics on adult basic education, training facilities and tertiary institutions are also available from separate data sets.

Socio-economic information

The HSRC has for several years been the leader in the provision of GIS-related socio-economic information in the country. It has disseminated comprehensive data sets at many different spatial levels to interested parties throughout South Africa. The HSRC was the first organization to publish a comprehensive atlas of socio-economic information based on the results of the 1991 census. Researchers add extensive knowledge to this information, thus making the HSRC a leader in the provision of reliable socio-economic information.

Poverty Indicators

Where the Poverty Gap shows the depth of poverty in an area, the Gini Coefficient shows the extent of income inequality. These two internationally recognized poverty indicators have been mapped by the GIS Centre at a small area level (e.g. municipality). Poverty indicators are required to identify areas that are poverty stricken and require intervention by government.

Geodemographic/Lifestyle Segmentation Information

The GIS Centre was the first to categorize census information into geodemgraphic/lifestyle segmentation categories for the whole of South Africa at a small spatial level. Detailed descriptions of each category make the information indispensable for market analysis and the development of new business ventures. The GIS Centre is committed to provide the most up to date and accurate information available to its clients. New indicators are continually being added to the dataset, including 1999 population estimates, the day-time population of the country and AMP's LSM's.

National Survey Information

The HSRC undertakes many national surveys annually. These are sampled at a localized level and in such a manner that the information can be extrapolated to different spatial levels in the whole country. Examples of such surveys include the 1998 crime survey, the 2000 arrestee alcohol and drug abuse survey (SA-ADAM), the 1999 national perception survey and the 1998 identity document survey undertaken on behalf of the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC).
