Impact of government programmes

The Office of the President approached the HSRC to assist it undertake this project. The objective of the study was to determine whether major government programmes were targeting the correct areas in terms of poverty and infrastructure backlogs as well as whether the programmes were having an impact on the social well-being of the people. The project is still ongoing but one of the major issues to arise out of the project is the need for government to develop a mechanism by which the information on all major government programmes could be centralized in one department and that the databases are in a standard format that will allow them to be quickly mapped and analyzed.

The map shows the number of TB cases per 100 000 population at a provincial level. The Western Cape has historically been the province that has been affected the most by this disease. All provinces are showing a general increase in the number of cases, which is attributed to better reporting and service provision.
