This two-day colloquium was held at the Irene Country Lodge, Centurion. It aimed to expand understanding of the contribution of education to human capital development and poverty reduction strategies, and attempted to build on the recent national and international conferences on poverty reduction strategies. The main argument of the colloquium was that major reductions in human deprivations are possible, and that forces of global integration and technological advances need to be harnessed to serve the interests of poor people. The colloquium dealt with experiences of both policy makers and policy implementers. It aimed to provide answers to these questions:- What impact has there been in recent years on education levels and outcomes in the general population, and in specific groupings in society?
- Where are the key gaps and areas that need strengthening in terms of the impact of education in poverty reduction?
- What specific areas require coherence?
The colloquium involved 55 participants including policy makers, government officials, academics, consultants and researchers.
