The Second Economy:
Linkages between the Formal and Informal Economies

To be held on Saturday, 24 March 2007, 10h00 to 15h30

The Dialogue is designed as an engagement between prominent South African and international economists working on the informal economy and senior policymakers in South African government departments. The Dialogue offers policymakers a unique space to engage with some of the leading thinkers of the informal economy and to be informed of other international experiences.

The Dialogue will be attended by leading international academics Ravi Kanbur, Gary Fields, Kaushik Basu and Nancy Chau of Cornell University, Marty Chen of Harvard University, Namrata Bali, General Secretary of the Self-employed Women’s Association (SEWA) in India, Jeemol Unni from the National Commission on Enterprises in the Unorganised Sector, India, and South Africans Haroon Bhorat of the Development Policy Research Unit, University of Cape Town, Francie Lund, Caroline Skinner and Imraan Valodia of the University of KwaZulu-Natal, and Miriam Altman of the Human Sciences Research Council.
