The Middle East Project represents a two-year pilot project of the HSRC's Democracy and Governance (D&G) programme. It was established in June 2007 to research and report on issues in the Middle East relevant to South African foreign policy. It is directed by Dr Virginia Tilley, a chief research specialist for D&G who is well-published on democracy, nation-building, and ethnic and racial conflict in Latin America and the Middle East. The Middle East Project can be contacted through the D&G at +27 (0)21 466-8070 or at mep@hsrc.ac.za. The D&G programme is one of six multi-disciplinary research programmes in the HSRC. D&G examines issues regarding the building and consolidating of democracy and improving governance in South Africa and Africa. Recently it has extended this agenda to building research partnerships with similarly concerned institutions in Latin America, the Middle East, and South Asia. Focus areas include the following: Equality, equity and governance Justice and human rights State capacity and development Institutional biographies and transformations SA, Africa and the world
The Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) of South Africa is a statutory body, established by the South African Parliament in 1968. Its research is designed to support democracy and development in South Africa, in the Southern African Development Community (SADC), and in Africa. It primarily conducts large-scale, policy-relevant, social-scientific projects for public-sector users, non-governmental organisations and international development agencies, in partnership with researchers in Africa and globally. The HSRC has a research complement of about 165 researchers, 63 technical staff, and 128 support staff and has offices in Pretoria, Cape Town, and Durban. It is funded through an ongoing grant by the South African Parliament and by sources soliciting or partnering in special research projects.
