Gender and poverty reduction: Voice, dialogue and targeting

This symposium brought together 56 delegates, comprising researchers, policy makers, and members of civil society organisations in dialogue with each other. Minister Noluthando Mayende-Sibiya Ministry of Women, Children, Youth and People with Disabilities officially launched the symposium. Advocate Nomazotsho Memani-Belani represented Honourable Minister Edna Molewa, Minister of Social Development at the gala dinner. Partner organisations included the Independent Development Trust (IDT), the Department of Science and Technology (DST), South African Women in Dialogue (SAWID) and the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), the South African Local Government Association (SALGA), the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA).The Keynote speaker was Professor Elaine Unterhalter, Institute of Education, University of London.

National workshop on African peer review mechanism

This workshop which was held in collaboration with the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO). The workshop was attended by 35 delegates representing key organisations and partners. The main objective of the workshop was to exchange knowledge in terms of the African Peer Review Mechanism (APRM) process as a unique African instrument of good governance. The workshop provided an opportunity for Government, the APRM Secretariat, academics and civil society to share ideas on how to successfully implement and enhance the APRM process.  Expectation of this workshop was based on four aspects that could lead to the strengthening of the APRM: Creating linkages with other African Union institutions e.g. the Pan-African Parliament, the Commission, NEPAD process, etc; A greater focus on the implementation process; The identification of cross-cutting issues; and Sharing of experiences. It is planned that a follow up series will be held.

1st World Social Science Forum

The ISSC has undertaken to regularly organise a World Social Science Forum (WSSF). These events will bring together major stakeholders in international social science co-operation to discuss substantive topics of world relevance and priorities for the future of international social science. The first WSSF will be held in Bergen, Norway, on May 10-12, 2009. The theme of this event is "One Planet - Worlds Apart".
