An estimated 22 000 delegates from over 175 countries attended the recent XXII International AIDS Conference which was held in Mexico City from 3-8 August 2008. The conference served as a momentous occasion to share experiences and review progress on national and global responses to the HIV epidemic. South Africa was represented by a large number of delegates which included, among others, our Deputy President Phumzile Mlambo-Nqcuka who is the current Chair of the South African National AIDS Council (SANAC). The HSRC and the national Department of Social Development (DSD) are jointly organising a seminar to provide a brief overview of the conference and discuss about some of the lessons learnt for South Africa in the fight against HIV/AIDS. Among the panellists will be Prof. Leickness Simbayi (Chair), Prof. Thomas Rehle and Dr Olive Shisana from the HSRC and Dr Connie Kganakga from DSD who will speak lessons learnt on social and behavioural prevention, biomedical issues, children and HIV, and government-run programmes to mitigate the impact of HIV/AIDS, all respectively.
