Starting from a definition of the modern nation state, the presentation will briefly sketch the relationship between the nation, culture, ethnicity and the homogenising thrust of the modern state. The perseverance or resurgence of ethnicity is then explored, both in a more general perspective and more specifically in post-colonial settings, and more specifically to Southern Africa. This is then linked to the complex issue of accommodating ethnicity and particularly its institutional expression in traditional authority, within the postcolonial, republican state. Such issues relate to decentralisation as well as point back to the overarching theme of homogenisation. Please RSVP by 12 February to:
