Social Aspects of HIV/AIDS and Health
Date : 14 August 2009
Time : 12:15 - 13:30
Location : Video Conference Centres, HSRC Buildings: Pretoria, Cape Town and Durban
Presenters :

Prof. Dr. Andreas Ziegler, Institut für Medizinische Biometrie und Statistik, Universität zu Lübeck, Germany

The term interaction has a different meaning, depending on the context of discussion. Scientists need to be made aware of the difference.

This talk discusses the concepts of statistical and biological interactions as well as interactions in public health and individual decision making. Statistical testing of interactions between exposure to pesticides and the multidrug resistance 1 gene (MDR1) on Parkinson's is demonstrated as well as the within-gene interaction of mutations in the RET proto-oncogene on Hirschsprung's disease.

The techniques discussed are also applicable to HIV/AIDS cases.
