This presentation will focus on the accomplishments and practices of the largest and longest-running source of objectively measured health and nutrition data in the world.  The history of the survey will be described as well as some of the most significant findings from the survey.  The National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) is conducted by the National Centre for Health Statistics, part of the United States (US) Centres for Disease Control and Prevention. The primary objective of the survey is to assess the health and nutritional status of the US population through in-home personal interviews and direct physical measures in mobile examination centres. Since its inception 50 years ago, NHANES has expanded to include a nutritional component as well as measures of environmental exposure and infectious disease.
