Xolela Mangcu to join HSRC

Dr Xolela Mangcu will be joining the HSRC from 1 November as Executive Director of the Social Cohesion and Integration Research Programme, the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC), announced yesterday.

He will be taking over from Dr Wilmot James, who is leaving the HSRC to become Chair of the Immigration Advisory Board.

Dr Mangcu was previously Director of the Steve Biko Foundation and Associate Editor of the Sunday Independent, and is a prominent public analyst and columnist. He has a PhD from Cornell University in the US, has held visiting fellowships at MIT, Harvard and the Rockefeller Foundation, and is WE du Bois non-resident Fellow at Harvard. He is an adjunct professor at the University of Fort Hare.

"Dr Mangcu's interests in social identity and political culture mesh closely with the research programme he will be leading. We look forward to the innovative research projects which he will be undertaking and funding", said Dr Mark Orkin, CEO of the HSRC.
