The Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) compiled two guides that contain all the information that school leavers need to make a decision about tertiary and distance education. Both the?1997 Student?s Guide to Distance Education in SA (at R49.95) and the?1997 Student?s Guide to Higher Education in South Africa (at R79.95) are published by Southern Directories (Pty) Ltd and will be available in bookstores as from May. Alternatively they can also be ordered directly from the HSRC (PO Box 5556, PRETORIA 0001). The Student?s Guide to Distance Education in South Africa is a comprehensive guide providing course and address details of distance learning institutions, as well as useful indexes to the fields of study and qualifications listed by each institution. It includes for the first time a checklist that can assist students in selecting suitable courses and judging their quality. The Guide to Distance Education is intended for people who wish to improve their promotional prospects through further study or those who are unemployed and need to acquire a qualification to enter the job market. It also provides interesting information for people who simply wish to broaden their horizons through personal study. The Student?s Guide to Higher Education in South Africa is aimed at school leavers, parents and guidance counsellors and will greatly simplify the task of guiding young people in their choice of, firstly, a career and, secondly, an appropriate qualification. The Guide to Higher Education focuses on the study opportunities available to school leavers at universities, technikons, technical colleges and private colleges in South Africa. This?1997 edition includes address details of agricultural colleges, nursing colleges and teacher training institutions. It also contains bursary details and a handy, separately bound booklet with addresses for bursary application.
