Valuable source on South African development organisations launched

The Human Sciences Research Council's Programme for Development Research (PRODDER) launched the 8th edition of its South African Development Directory last night (1 December 1998).

The PRODDER Directory for 1998/99 was developed in conjunction with the South African National NGO Coalition (SANGOCO) and aims to support the South African development process by providing a comprehensive overview of the activities of the country's roleplayers in the development sector.

The directory contains comprehensive contact and background detail on 2 514 development-related organisations, which include national and provincial government departments, parastatals, research institutions, diplomatic representation, CSI (corporate social investment) programmes, NGOs, development corporations and international funding agencies.

For the first time Geographical Information System (GIS) maps have been included in the directory. These provide the end-user with a better understanding of the spatial distribution of South African development organisations and the issues that they address.
