SA epidemic has stabilised - third national HIV survey
South Africa's HIV epidemic has levelled off at a prevalence of 10.9% for people aged two years and older, with 5.2 million people estimated to be living with HIV in 2008. HIV prevalence has also declined among children aged 2-14, from 5.6% in 2002 to 2.5% in 2008, and a decline in new infections has also been noted among teenagers aged 15-19.

Report: Israel practicing apartheid in Palestinian territories
The Human Sciences Research Council of South Africa (HSRC) has released a study indicating that Israel is practicing both colonialism and apartheid in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. The study is being posted for public debate on the HSRC website.

The Coalition on Children Affected by AIDS (CCABA) has congratulated Dr Eric Goosby on his nomination to lead PEPFAR, the President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief. CCABA members including the HSRC also issued a call to increase the focus on children and families in the global AIDS fight.

Child Care Forums provide much-needed services, but their role and relationships with other service providers need to be clarified, said Vuyiswa Mathambo of the HSRC here at the 4th SA AIDS Conference. Child Care Forums are locally-based groups caring for vulnerable children within their communities.

Insufficient support for HIV-discordant couples
The needs of HIV-discordant couples (i.e. where one partner is HIV positive and the other HIV negative) have received insufficient attention in the research and policy agenda. Discordant couples ought to be provided with sexual and reproductive health services in a supportive and non-discriminatory environment; and should be engaged in the HIV response.

South Africans tend to oppose political intervention by religious leaders in relation to swaying voting decisions during times of elections and broader state decision-making. The latest round of the annual South African Social Attitudes Survey (SASAS), conducted nationally in November and early December 2008, included a detailed module on religious beliefs and practice.

How will South Africans vote in the upcoming elections?
The African National Congress (ANC) remains the most popular party among voters, but with less than a majority at 47%. The DA seems on course to maintain its official opposition status with 7% of the electorate saying they would vote for the party. More voters, at 3%, expressed preference for the newly formed Congress of the People (COPE) over the other old, established parties such as the Inkatha Freedom Party (IFP) and the Independent Democrats (ID) with only 2% and 1% respectively, saying that they would get their votes.
