Conference on the Developmental State in South Africa   Conference on the Developmental State in South Africa
04 - 06 June 2008
Cradle of Humankind, Johannesburg, South Africa
This conference will look at the potentials for and challenges of constructing a democratic developmental state in South Africa. A developmental state is one in which the state actively intervenes in the economy so that it becomes globally competitive, investment increases and consequently a high growth rate is achieved. There is unfortunately little consensus around the nature, policy objectives and institutional characteristics of a developmental state - a problem which will hamper the construction of a developmental state in South Africa. This invitation-only conference seeks to bring together important role-players such as politicians, policy-makers and academics in order to build common understanding around these issues.
