Project summary

The purpose of the study is to assess the viability of the marriages and divorces series of the Health and Vital Statistics Division of Statistics South Africa. Specifically, the study would assess:

  • the published series especially with regard to content and analysis;
  • the relevance of the series in the Division of Health and Vital Statistics;
  • the importance of publishing statistics of marriages and divorces;
  • the need to continue publishing the statistics on marriages and divorces;
  • the level of use of the reports by stakeholders;
  • alternative sources of marriage and divorce statistics;
  • limitations of marriage and divorce statistics from the various sources;
  • the disadvantages of having to suspend or discontinue the series on marriages and divorces;
  • the completeness and quality of data used in the series; and
  • depending on the outcome of the assessment and based on the available data, make recommendations for improvements in published information in terms of quality and content.
