Project summary

The Commonwealth Secretariat has been requested by member governments to develop approaches to the assessment and management of the impact of HIV/AIDS on health human resources in Commonwealth member countries, with the main purpose of strengthening the capacity of health human resource managers.

Identifiable experts and organisations in the areas of HR and/or AIDS impact tools and models, planning and research, participated in a consultative meeting facilitated by the Social Aspects of HIV/AIDS and Health Research Programme within the HSRC, to discuss how best to make these tools more accessible, simple, user-friendly and cost-effective.

The meeting provided an opportunity for participants to:

  • share their products with the Commonwealth;
  • facilitate the use of available epidemiological, surveillance and other data systems as decision support tools for planning and management of health sector human resources;
  • strengthen the research capacity of the health sector to assess the impact of HIV/AIDS on the health workforce; and
  • use the information to continuously improve human resource planning and management.
