Professor Thobeka Mda has been appointed deputy executive director of the Capacity Enhancement unit. She holds a PhD in Educational Policy and Leadership, in the areas of curriculum, instruction and professional development from the Ohio State University, USA.
Her experience includes teaching at high schools, in former Transkei, Soweto and East Rand; lecturing at the Kathorus College of Education in the East Rand, and recently, a professorship at the University of South Africa. She is also a former dean of the Faculty of Education at Unisa, where she became the first female dean, as well as one of the first two black deans at Unisa. She is a member of various professional committees and is currently the president of the Southern African Comparative & History of Education Society (SACHES).
Her areas of research interest include: language in education, diversity in schooling, and teacher development. She has presented conference papers locally and internationally, as well as published widely in these research areas.
Her publication record includes the editing and co-authoring of books as well as authoring chapters and articles in education scholarly publications. Her most recent work, Providing for diversity in public schools: A comparison of South Africa and Nova Scotia Province, Canada, will appear later this year. It looks at the educational policies and provisions in the two regions to address various forms of diversity in public schools, with the aim of achieving equality and equity |
