The Governance, Peace, and Security team of the Africa Institute of South Africa (AISA) successfully concluded a 7-day Presidential Election Observation Mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) from 17–23 December 2023. Based in Downtown Kinshasa, La Gombe, the mission aimed to propel South Africa’s foreign affairs agenda by promoting transparent, accessible, and fair elections. The team focused on safeguarding the democratic rights of citizens and ensuring adherence to international standards, thereby advocating democratic principles and fostering international collaboration.

Engagements with various stakeholders, including His Excellency Ambassador Mxolisi Shilubane, were paramount throughout the mission. A comprehensive briefing was provided to the ambassador, outlining the team’s observations and insights gathered during the election phase. An essential activity involved the meticulous assessment of 10 polling stations in La Gombe, where the team evaluated adherence to electoral procedures, the conduct of officials, and the overall atmosphere at these crucial sites. The findings will contribute to a comprehensive report that aims to enhance understanding and support the promotion of transparent and fair electoral processes.
