The Democracy, Governance and Service Delivery (DGSD) research programme of the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) in South Africa, and the Institute of West-Asian and African Studies of the Chinese Academy of Social Science (CASS) in Beijing are currently engaged in the second phase of a collaborative study to explore the Chinese presence in Africa and the African presence in China. The first phase was a study of the Chinese presence in Pretoria and the South African presence in China.

This seminar introduces the new project with two presentations: the first, presented by Professor Li Xinfeng of CASS, is a broad overview of Africans living in three Chinese cities and African students at several Chinese universities; and the second, presented by Dr Gregory Houston of the HSRC, is a broad overview of Chinese living in several major cities in seven African countries – Angola, Botswana, Ghana, Mozambique, South Africa, Swaziland or Zimbabwe.
