The seminar will discuss the declaration adopted at the BRICS Summit held on 15 July 2014 in Fortaleza, Brazil with the theme of “Inclusive Growth: Sustainable Solutions.” The Summit was successful as agreements were reached in areas that will strengthen the impact of BRICS on global development underpinned by inclusive macroeconomic and social policies. Highlights included the creation of the New Development Bank and the Contingency Reserve Arrangement. The briefing will discuss progress made so far in consolidating BRICS and also in charting the strategic direction of this group.

The Fortaleza meeting was a step  towards defining a clearer vision and strategic approach to move BRICS from five fingers to one hand. The heads of state took note of the BTTC recommendation on the long-term strategy for BRICS which focus on five pillars upon which a long-term strategy for cooperation will rest, namely:

(a)  promoting cooperation for economic growth and development;

(b) maintaining peace and security by recognising the central role of the UN and respect for the rule of law;

(c) promoting social justice, sustainable development and quality of life;

(d) reforming the global political and economic governance architecture in order to better represent the interests of developing nations; and

(e) attaining progress through knowledge and innovation sharing.

The seminar will elaborate on this vision and  outline the next steps
