Rapid technology advancements are offering opportunities for countries in Southern and East Africa. Financial technologies or fintech, can assist countries in this region to leapfrog over expensive infrastructure investments Fintech can also assist lower-income consumers to  gain easier access and sustainability use financial services. To best deliver these benefits, this study examines the barriers faced by the financially excluded and the innovative financial entrepreneur. In reviewing the factors affecting the demand for and supply of financial services, the study defines the determinants of financial inclusion promoting the needs of the consumer and recognising the requirements of innovators to gain access to the market and compete within the financial sector. By identifying the sustainable usage of financial products as the goal for financial inclusion, this study explores whether benefits such as increased savings, access to credit and small business empowerment can contribute to poverty and inequality reduction in the region. This colloquium provides you the opportunity to learn of primary research conducted in Southern and East African countries, discussing how financial technologies can promote socio economic benefits in the region. Contributions will be made from researchers and private sector participants active within the fintech sector.
