This research explores livelihood transitions from primary economic activities into tourism employment in marginalised communities. The emphasis is on the developmental role of tourism within a sustainable development framework in areas where traditional activities such as agriculture, fishing and mining have declined, and tourism has grown. We are interested in considering whether, and how, affected communities in the UK and South Africa cope with the ‘change’ often brought on by environmental factors: what communities’ coping strategies are, the role tourism has played in diversifying local livelihoods, if and how obstacles to participation in the tourism economy are overcome, how capabilities are built; as well as impacts on gender and community relations. This research addresses an under investigated area that is the nexus of sustainable human resources, livelihoods, decent employment and inclusive development in tourism. The research aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals 1 (poverty), 5 (gender) and 8 (decent work); and is concerned with resilience in tourism.
