The dialogue between the past and the present: the importance of the archives of the Human Sciences Research Council and its predecessors, the Bureau of Educational and Social Research and the National Council for Social Research, 1929 to 2019

Presenter: Dr Astrid Schwenke, Archival researcher / Historian
HSRC Date: 24 July 2019
Time: 12h30-14:00
Venues: Pretoria, Durban and Cape Town | Vidyo

This seminar will focus on one of the objectives of the 50/90-year Anniversary Project; namely the establishment of a digital archival repository regarding the Bureau of Educational and Social Research, the National Council for Social Research and the Human Sciences Research Council.

The task of the archival team is to digitally record the material at hand and those at other institutions. This memory making process requires an unbiased approach and the following questions needs to be addressed: What is the extent of the archival collection at the HSRC and HSRC-related material; Why has there never before been an attempt to systematically establish an HSRC Archive; How can this endeavour provide the researcher an overview or insight into the growth, development and contribution of the HSRC and its predessors.
