The transformation initiatives within the higher education sector of South Africa have focused on key issues, including low enrolment and high attrition rates. These issues are exacerbated at postgraduate level. Graduate tracer research has been used internationally to empirically assess graduate issues, yet has been minimally and sporadically utilised in the South African context.
This seminar will provide a brief overview of the results of a cross-sectional, online graduate tracer study survey that was conducted among a population of postgraduate alumni with professional Masters in clinical and research psychology at the University of the Western Cape. There is a noted shortage of psychological professionals in South Africa, reducing access to mental health care services for the population and increasing the strain on practicing psychologists. It is therefore important to identify how these highly skilled professional psychology graduates are absorbed into the labour market, before identifying how these capacity constraints can be mitigated.
