The ‘#RhodesMustFall’ and ‘#FeesMustFall’ protests collectively became the largest student social movement since the dawn of South Africa’s democracy in 1994. The protests emanated from two major challenges facing higher education: alienation and access. The discontents of the students were undeniably legitimate. Yet despite the legitimacy of the demands, these struggles had to be undertaken in a manner that did not undermine universities as safe and free spaces for ideas. But elements of these protests did precisely this and they often turned violent and violated the rights of others. #FeesMustFall provides an important case study on social protests in South Africa, their successes and failures, and the challenges they pose for advancing social justice in our contemporary world.
This seminar will be the third in the DGSD Democracy and Disruption series
