Genders and sexualities in Africa: Changing times

Date: 19 July 2018    Time: 12:30 – 13:30  Venues: Pretoria, Durban and Cape Town

This is a time of significant change in relation to sexual and gender diversity across the African continent. Sexual and gender minorities are becoming more vocal, more visible and more determined in working towards full social inclusion. However this social movement has been met by significant political, cultural, legislative and religious backlash. In this rapidly shifting context the ‘Genders and Sexualities in Africa’ working group in the Human and Social Development (HSD) Programme focuses on a number of key priority areas in the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) people. These include: violence, including homophobia and transphobia; the challenges and opportunities for queer youth; the role of language related to sexual orientation and gender identity (SOGI); and the impact of culture and religion on LGBTI life. There is a sustained global movement to promote and protect the human rights of sexual and gender minorities which finds expression on the annual International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia (IDAHOT) on May 17 each year.
