Socio-economic research focuses on addressing societal ills, yet the underlying geography is not always explored. The spatial concentration of HIV/Aids cases or crime incidents can reveal much about social behaviour and focus interventions in the most appropriate areas. Spatial patterns of inequalities and urban densification can be identified to direct resources effectively.

This presentation highlights the value-add and enhanced understanding that geospatial technologies such as Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Remote Sensing bring to the socio-economic research perspective. Through sampling methodology, fieldwork maps and spatial analysis, the researcher has greater scope and different techniques of understanding results. Finally, geo-targeted interventions have shown to be much more successful than those without a spatial perspective. The visualization component of the geospatial technologies makes it easier for decision makers and policy makers to understand the research results.
