Africa has been the only continent to have registered steady growth over the past decade and a half. Over the same period there had been significant macroeconomic improvements, political and regulatory reforms, improved governance overall, and an increased commitment to political stability as compared to previous decades. These positive developments incited the rhetoric that “Africa was rising”, the continent had turned a new corner in a positive direction. However this new level of growth and positive turnaround seems to have been short lived. Africa still faces persistent challenges that hold the potential to steer the continent off this new positive trajectory.

This paper contrasts Africa’s gains against its pertaining challenges, in terms of Africa’ changing economic structure, Africa’s level of competitiveness compared to other developing regions like Latin America and the Caribbean, East Asia and the Pacific, and the relevance of Africa’s development outlook going forward, i.e. Agenda 2063, SDGs and the changing development assistance landscape e.g. China’s increasing influence in Africa’s development space.
