In September 2015 the global community transitioned from Millennium Development Goals agenda (MDGs) to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with a sobering recognition that the MDGs, particularly in the African Continent and Southern Africa,  did not realise some of the goals and targets set. This was particularly pronounced in relation to transforming the lives of children, who are over represented amongst the most vulnerable. South Africa’s Close Out Report on the 15 year MDG journey, recently presented at the UN Summit for SDGs in New York in Sept 2015 noted that poverty and inequality remain the major challenges for South Africa and that between 2000 and 2015 the situation had not improved sufficiently.

The adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development with 17 goals and 169 targets by global leaders provides much hope in that it has involved unprecedented levels of engagement with stakeholders in the formulation of the goals and targets. Importantly the SDG agenda outlines processes for building on and strengthening the MDGs with a commitment to leaving No ONE BEHIND. Child wellbeing is central to many of these goals and targets.

In commemoration of Universal Children’s Day on the 20th November 2015, the HSRC invites you to join us in this forum to reflect on the South Africa’s progress in the realization of the MDG’s over the past 15 years and importantly to assess the opportunities and challenges that the SDG agenda provides in the fulfillment of the rights of children and making this a world fit for children. A panel of researchers will lead discussion on South Africa’s progress in realization of the MDGs and to help us consider what South Africa must do and how to intensify efforts to strengthen the links between SDGs and children’s rights.
