Macroeconomic Policy Framework for Africa's Structural Transformation

Presenter:
Dr Abdalla Hamdok, Deputy Executive Secretary and Chief Economist, United Nations Economic Commission for Africa

Date: 30 August 2018    Time: 12:30 – 13:30  Venues: Pretoria, Durban and Cape Town

Macroeconomic policies are at the heart of creating a conducive environment for sustainable growth and development. African countries have experienced constant shifts in macroeconomic policy. These shifts have often undermined development efforts and failed to bring about structural transformation and inclusive development. While the imperative for structural transformation has been widely acknowledged, there has been no fundamental change in thinking about macroeconomic management.

The Seminar is expected to address the imperative of long-term development planning underpinned by forward-looking macroeconomic policy frameworks for Africa’s development. In specific terms, the Seminar will shed light on issues related to:
• Short-term stabilization policy and long-term policies for development
• Key determinants and drivers of Structural Transformation
• The role of Macroeconomic Policy in the development process
• The essential components or elements for a Macroeconomic Framework for Structural Transformation
