Presenters: Adlai Davids & Ebrahim Hoosain HIV/AIDS, STIs & TB (HAST)

Presentation available for download below:

Policy-relevant Tuberculosis (TB) indicators for the Nelson Mandela Bay Health District (NMBHD) namely TB incidence rate,  TB cure rate and drug-resistant TB rate paints a bleak picture of TB control efforts to combat the scourge of TB.  In this context, the HSRC tested a four-pillared intervention to enhance TB treatment adherence. This intervention provided an opportunity to map newly-diagnosed GXP-positive TB cases, their DOT supporters, TB treatment progress and outcomes.

This presentation will focus on maps produced that could potentially assist ward councillors, facility managers and clinic committees to track TB campaign progress within their healthcare service areas. Through in-depth interviews and focus group discussions, the views of these stakeholders were explored as to the potential usefulness of maps in monitoring TB campaigns.  The views of the three stakeholder groups were telling as to how maps portray the extent of TB in their areas, as well as suggesting how changes from a user-perspective could improve the usefulness of maps.

The HSRC seminar series is funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DST). The views and opinions expressed therein  as well as findings and statements of the seminar series do not necessarily represent the views of DST.
