The HSRC seminar series is funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DST). The views and opinions expressed therein as well as findings and statements of the seminar series do not necessarily represent the views of DST.

It has been posited, “human development, if not engendered, is fatally endangered” (cited in Singhal 2003, 183). This and many other statements attest to the utility of being conscious of the gender implications of every decision made with regard to development, however defined. On the African continent, nonetheless, the subject of gender has yet to gain the popularity needed to ensure that there are specific measurable commitments instead of mere lip service.

A number of factors contribute to this neglect of gender, including prevailing socio-cultural practices that place women and their household in disadvantageous positions. This seminar addresses the gender issue in Africa’s political economy from a multi-dimensional perspective with examples from Ghana and South Africa, covering broad areas such socio-economic parity, autonomy and access to natural resources, governance, (post-) MDGs’ Sustainable Development Goals. The overall objective is to showcase the current realities but more so to provide a projection of how gender and its intersections play an integral part of political economy debates and policy-making. The seminar will conclude with a pre-launch of a forthcoming edited book titled: Millennium Development Goals in Retrospect: Africa’s Development beyond 2015. Editors and authors will present to address the questions on gender development.

The seminar may be attended in Pretoria, Cape Town or Durban
