The past few years along with the events of the recent months has shown us that we are not the rainbow nation we once envisaged. Increasing protests, racism, inequality, poverty and political contention tell us that there is still much more to be done. In this context, a new, all-encompassing conversation about restitution is essential.

However, restitution is a difficult, restless and provocative word. It speaks about confronting injustice and actively deciding what needs to be done to address a past that continues to erode the present despite our many efforts.

This seminar reports on the outcomes of the inaugural conference on restitution held at the Castle of Good Hope. The conference was convened by the Human Sciences Research Council, the Restitution Foundation and the Castle of Good Hope along with 11 NGO and academic partners.

This seminar will be of interest to academics, individuals, civil society organisations and institutional leaders as we grapple with how to move forward on the many ideas the conference generated.

The HSRC seminar series is funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DST). The views and opinions expressed therein  as well as findings and statements of the seminar series do not necessarily represent the views of DST.
