The South African National Youth Policy 2014-2019 posits that resource poor youth, especially those that have fallen out of the educational, social and economic mainstream must be empowered through effective programmes and other supportive measures that demand a multi-sectorial approach involving stakeholders in the public sector, civil society and the private sector working together in promoting youth development. For that reason, the type of marginalisation faced by youth calls for youth-targeted interventions that will enable young people’s active participation and engagement in both society and the economy. These interventions must not only be youth targeted but additionally, youth-led. This seminar shares some learnings from an intervention called Your Voice, Your Choice: democratic dialogues for marginalized first time voting youth. This pilot study tested whether a mini intervention can positively influence participants to not only vote, but to find meaning in voting, and to furthermore encourage and facilitate other young people voting.

The purpose of the Your Voice, Your Choice intervention is to empower young people through increasing their voter awareness and their capacity to engage meaningfully in their communities, in order to promote civic participation. Your Voice, Your Choice uses innovative participatory methodologies to engage young people in dialogues and film-making in order to capture young people’s view of the political landscape of South Africa, including how they envision changing it.
