There are two enduring pictures which pretty much sum up the South African year; the one is of men gathering on a koppie in Marikana with shots being fired amid the dust.

The other is of an ageing George Bizos shedding tears while speaking at the funeral of his friend, former chief justice Arthur Chaskalson.
