Midwifery could save the nation

Childbirth is universally celebrated, an occasion for champagne popping, dancing and gifts, a moment many women see as affirmation. Yet for many thousands of women, childbirth is experienced as a private hell that may end in death. As in many other developing countries, being poor and pregnant in South Africa can be equated to opening your own coffin. Even skydiving is safer.
