Africa Institute Repeal Bill sent to President
The Africa Institute of South Africa Act Repeal Bill was passed by the National Council of Provinces yesterday and sent to President Jacob Zuma for assent.
Reference group on analysis and use of crime stats proposed
A top crime expert has told Parliament’s police committee that crime statistics for the past two years could not be trusted, because they were based on out-dated population estimates. He has also proposed a reference group on crime stats - including the HSRC - to better inform South Africans about crime trends and threats.
Minister Hanekom addresses HSRC researchers at annual conference
Inequalities and Justice: Influences, Effects, Intersections and Evidence, this is the title of the HSRC's 2013 social sciences research conference. Minister of Science and Technology Derek Hanekom delivered one of the keynote addresses at the conference.

Africa Institute Repeal Bill to be Introduced
The Department of Science and Technology has announced its intention to introduce the Africa Institute of South Africa Act Repeal Bill during 2013. The bill repeals the Africa Institute of South Africa Act (2001) and disestablishes the Africa Institute while providing for the transfer of its assets, liabilities, rights and obligations.
The bill also provides for the transfer of employees from the institute into the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC) and ring fences the institute's budget within the HSRC.
HSRC appointed as incubator for a South African BRICS think tank
South Africa is hosting the BRICS Summit (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) in Durban from 26 to 27 March 2013. Prior to this meeting the officials of these countries are coming together to participate in various related activities. One of these activities is a consortium of BRICS think tanks.
Call for papers- "The Life and Times of Neville Alexander"
A conference will be held to commemorate "The Life and Times of Neville Alexander", thinker, scholar, political prisoner and revolutionary. The Conference will take place at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) in Port Elizabeth on the 5-8th July 2013 (inclusive) and will be hosted jointly by the University and its Centre for Non-Racialism and Democracy (CANRAD).
The conference is intended to stimulate critical reflection, debate and discussion, on the life and work of Neville Alexander and its relevance to contemporary local and global issues focusing on both the intellectual and practical challenges facing society.
