Gender equity and women's empowerment
Below please find brief on the special edition on gender, poverty and inequality edited by Dr Catherine Ndinda.
The academic leadership of the HSRC is well-established in the domain of ‘Gender Equity and Women’s Empowerment’. A leading expert in the field, Dr Catherine Ndinda, a Chief Research Specialist in EPD, has recently edited a special issue of Journal of International Women Studies (JIWS) on this theme.
Cutting edge contributions to this special issue unravel the layers of discrimination that keep women in different contexts materially deprived and oppressed. The edition comes at a period when globally, achieving gender equality and empowering all women and all girls is at the forefront of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) or Agenda 2030 of the United Nations. In the South African context, the edition speaks to issues that remain contentious and yet fundamental in the debates on land redistribution, poverty alleviation and the empowerment of women. While the edition contains articles from diverse contexts, the contributions shift our knowledge on gender, poverty and inequality to new frontiers by showcasing how women are seizing the leadership in bringing to birth a world premised on social, economic and political equity.
