Call for proposals: urban transformations in SA

Partnerships news

As a direct outcome of the workshop on Urban Transformations which the HSRC co-hosted together with The Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) and the National Research Foundation (NRF) which was held in Cape Town from the 24 and 25 February 2015 the following call has been disseminated to:

Invite collaborative projects between UK and South African researchers which can offer additional value to existing programmes of urban research, and contribute to the economic development and welfare of South Africa and Africa more broadly.

The purpose of this call is to fund high-quality collaborative research on urban transformations in South Africa and/or wider Africa. In particular proposals which address the following topics are invited:

• Urban economies and livelihoods

• Land, infrastructure and sustainable urban development

• Urban politics, citizenship and participation

• Diversity, migration and practice

Proposals are invited for joint UK and South African projects; each proposal may request £300,000-£500,000 (at 100 per cent full economic cost) from the ESRC and R1 million to 1.5 million from NRF over three years.

Consortia should consider how their proposal makes the best use of available expertise in the UK and South Africa, the added value of collaboration and how the proposal will meet the ODA requirements (external PDF) of this Newton Fund activity and contribute towards the economic development and welfare of Africa.

Full proposals should be submitted to ESRC and NRF by 16.00BST/17.00 South African Time on 16 July 2015. The joint submission of identical proposals must be submitted by the UK Researchers to the UK Research Councils’ grant submission system which is known as ‘Je-S’; and by the South African Researchers on the NRF Online Submission System at . South African applicants must ensure that their Curriculum Vitae are updated on the NRF Online Submission system at

I am a permanent resident here in JHB since 2010. I am also a Brit with global experience though my living and working in diverse EU contries and also my extensive experince of SA. I would love to meet with the HSRC leadership to ascertain what value I may add to this project. I realise this is somewhat late but perhaps there is still an opportunity that I can assist even at this late stage.
Please call me if there is scope .
