This commissioned study on the State of the Youth in Gauteng Province on two research questions: (1) what is the state of research on youth issues in Gauteng, and (2) a situational analysis of the profile of the youth population in Gauteng and assessment of youth policies. This report has brought to the fore critical issues informed by a systematic review of literature and empirical analysis, covered in seven Chapters. To this effect, this report is divided into two parts: Chapters 1 ??? 3 presents an extensive literature review on youth development and assesses the state of research on youth in Gauteng. Chapter 1 deals with Introduction, while a cursory glance of legislative and political agenda of Youth development and empowerment is addressed in Chapter 2. Chapter 3 presents the state of research on Youth issues in Gauteng Province. Chapters 4 ??? 6 addresses the second aspect of the project, namely the profile of the youth in Gauteng and an assessment of youth development programmes of the Gauteng Provincial administration. Chapter 4 provides a profile of the Youth and Quality of life in Gauteng. Youth risk behaviours is covered in Chapter 5 while Chapter 6 dealt with perception of Business, Civil Society and Government on state of the Youth. The critical issues raised in all six chapters inform conclusions and recommendations in Chapter 7.
