Abstract

The skills planning mechanism provides an overarching framework for linking the demands of the economy with the types of skills produced by the education and training system, including those developed in the workplace by firms. There is limited understanding of how firms plan for skills development or what information they use. The purpose of this research is to explore the former issue and provide the basis for planning in the workplace. Another purpose of this research is to investigate how the generation of information at the workplace can be incorporated into the proposed skills planning mechanism for the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) in South??Africa
