Prof. Joleen Steyn Kotze is a Senior Research Specialist in Democracy, Governance, and Service Delivery at the Human Science Research Council. She was previously an Associate Professor of Political Studies at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University. She is also affiliated with the Centre of African Studies at the University of Free State as as Research Fellow.

As an Y2-Rated Researcher, Joleen Steyn Kotze?s academic interests lies in substantive democratisation and citizen experiences in a post-authoritarian context. She has published 15 articles, 7 book chapters, and has delivered numerous papers on democratisation in a non-Western context, democratic development, deepening democracy, and political culture and democratisation. In 2009 she was awarded the International Award for Research Excellence in Interdisciplinary Social Science by Commongound Publishing and in 2014 she was awarded the Top 40 Under 40 by the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber. She is the former President of the South African Association of Political Studies (2014 ? 2016) and the current editor of Politikon: South African Journal of Political Studies.
