Dr. Nompumelelo Zungu holds a Ph.D. in Psychology from the University of Cape Town. She is a Research Director of the Operational and Implementation Research Unit (OIR) in the HIV/AIDS, STIs and TB (HAST) research programme at the HSRC. She has over 18 years research experience and has been a chief of party, a co-investigator, a study director on several national surveys on HIV and AIDS, health and mental health. She has an extensive experience managing national and international collaborations on HIV and AIDS research.

Dr Zungu has expertise and special interest in mental health, social and cultural aspects of HIV/AIDS, risk and sexual behaviour among men and adolescents. She is currently one of the PI on the 5th National HIV Prevalence and Incidence Survey; and has been a Co-PI on the PEPFAR Gender Analysis and on the rapid ethnography study of the vulnerability of young women (aged 15-24) to HIV infection in three provinces of South Africa.

She is widely published, and has co-authored over 45 journal articles, 8 chapters, and 20 research reports.
