Dr Yul Derek Davids is a chief research specialist in the Developmental, Capable & Ethical State (DCES) division. He holds a MA from the University of the Western Cape (UWC) and a PhD in Political Studies from the University of Stellenbosch (2010). He specialises in the area of democracy, governance and social cohesion. He has also done work focussing on the socio-economic conditions of vulnerable people such as the poor and quality of life and wellbeing.

Experience and special projects: Derek has key expertise in project management, project conceptualization, proposal writing, Monitoring and Evaluation (M&E), large-scale surveys, community fieldwork, focus groups and key informant interviews. He has managed more than fifty national representative surveys, which included the Afrobarometer surveys. Derek can interact with key stakeholders from different sectors and at all levels. He did consultancy work for Management Systems International (MSI) in Nigeria, USAID in Tanzania as well as for the International Foundation for Elections Systems (IFES) in Uganda. Derek has done extensive work for the Electoral Commission (IEC) that includes an evaluation of their Vision, Mission and strategic direction. Currently he manages the State of the National (SoN) book publication and the Open Society Foundation Public Skills and Capacity Study.

Dr Davids is Advisory Member of the Unit of Applied Law at Cape Peninsula University and work closely with Professor Amanda Gouws at the Political Science Department of Stellenbosch University as well as Associate Professor Zandile Mchiza at the School of Public Health at the UWC Cape. Through these networks Derek regular lecture at the Summer School hosted by the School of Public Health at UWC and have moderated examinations of the Summer School. Derek is also an external examiner for the Political Science Department at Walter Sisulu University. During the past decade he has mostly conducted his research in the area of poverty, well-being and quality of life employing public opinion surveys. His recent contribution to the HSRC University of Johannesburg COVID-19 Democracy Survey project culminated in the publication of a series of newspaper articles that informed the policy debate on COVID-19 and the impact of the national lockdown..

Publications: Dr Davids has published 9 scientific articles in both local and international peer-reviewed academic journals, 30 scholarly articles, 55 research reports, 7 policy briefs, and 8 book chapters. He co-edited a book entitled South African Social Attitudes 2nd Report: Reflections on the Age of Hope (2010) which was published by the HSRC Press. He has also presented more than 50 papers and posters at both local and international conferences. He is currently co-editing a manuscript Paradise Lost: Race and Racism in Post-Apartheid South Africa.
