South African National Research and Experimental Development
The 2006/07 R&D survey results reveal gross expenditure on R&D (GERD) of R16.5 billion, that amounts to 0.95% of GDP and reflects a growth in this important indicator of 3.3%. The target of GERD: GDP reaching 1% by survey year 2008/09 is becoming attainable.
The 2005/06 survey showed that South Africa's gross expenditure on R&D was just over R14.1 billion or 0.92% of GDP.
