ABOUT THE HSRC

HSRC Board

The Board of the HSRC refers to the group of up to ten people, including a Chairperson, appointed for a period of four years by the Minister of Science and Technology. Appointees have distinguished themselves in the field of the human sciences or possess special qualifications in relation to some aspect of the functions of the Board. The Board appoints the President and Chief Executive Officer of the HSRC and s/he serves as a further, ex officio member. The Board is the accounting authority of the organisation for purposes of the Public Finance Management Act.

Ms Phumelele Nzimande (Interim Chair)
BA (Hons), University of Kwa-Zulu Natal.
Chief People Officer, SABC, formerly Deputy Director-General, Department of Communications, Postal Policy; Council member of the Universities of Kwa-Zulu Natal and Venda; Chair of the South African Postal Regulator and the Pan Africanist Postal Union Council.
Expertise: communications, health and gender issues.
 
Prof. Rashid Hassan
PhD, Iowa State University, USA.
Professor and Director, Centre for Environmental Economics and Policy in Africa (CEEPA):  University of Pretoria.
Expertise: environmental economics, agriculture and policy research.
 

Mr Thokwa Patrick Masobe

Chief Executive Officer of Vmed.
Chairperson of the Board of Directors: Health Systems Trust.
Expertise: strategic management, human resource, financial management and managing public and other stakeholder relations.

 
Prof. Lulama Qalinge
PhD
Director, School of Social Sciences and Associate Professor in Social Work:  North-West University.
Chairperson of Council- Mmabatho College of Nursing and Lesotho Highlands Development Authority.
Expertise: social sciences.
 
Prof. Paulus Zulu

Director and Senior Research Fellow, Maurice Webb Race Relations Unit: University of Kwa-Zulu Natal, Durban.

Prof. Amanda Lourens

Vice-rector, Research and Planning:  North-West University, Potchefstroom campus.
Member of the Ministerial task team on Research Development Grants for the Department of Education; Assistant Director of the SA Higher Education Retention Data Project; member: steering committee for the project: Evaluation and Rating Data; Deputy Chairperson of the North-West Research Coordinating Committee in the North-West Premier's Office and member of the DST/NRF Centre of Excellence in Strong Materials.
Expertise: research and statistics.

 
Prof. Pamela Naidoo

Prof. Akilagpa Sawyerr

Fellow of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Chairman of the Advisory Board of the Ghana Research and Advocacy Programme and member of the Board of Trustees for the Institute for Democratic Governance.
Expertise: globalisation, higher education, human development and international negotiations.

 
Dr Olive Shisana (President and CEO)
ScD, Johns Hopkins University
HSRC President and CEO; former positions held: Executive Director of the HSRC's Social Aspects of HIV/AIDS and Health research programme; Professor of Health Systems at the Medical University of South Africa; Executive Director, Family and Community Health at the World Health Organisation, Switzerland; Director-General of the South African Department of Health; Group Manager, South African Medical Research Council; and Acting Chief of Research and Statistics Division, District of Columbia (local) Government (USA).
Expertise: Public health professional with extensive research, management, policy development, fundraising and networking skills.
