Dr Christa van Zyl heads the Business Development unit of the HSRC.
She holds a PhD in comparative education from the University of Pretoria as well as an M. Ed in didactics from the University of South Africa. The latter focused on the use of educational broadcast media in schools and was obtained cum laude.
Prior to joining the HSRC, Dr Van Zyl worked as a high school mathematics teacher. She joined the Group: Education and Training of the HSRC as a junior researcher and has been involved in a broad range of projects. As researcher, project leader and research co-ordinator, she was involved in policy-relevant research projects covering such areas as the development and implementation of the national qualifications framework (NQF); the implementation of Curriculum 2005; effective governance and management in education; and the evaluation and effective utilisation of educational media such as radio, TV, video and computers in schools. Some of the above projects also included the development of learning materials or evaluation instruments.
Apart from experience as a researcher, Dr Van Zyl has worked in the HSRC as a research administrator for the Social Dynamics Group, and as funding co-ordinator in the Office of the President. She has authored, co-authored or edited various client reports, book chapters, journal articles, occasional papers, conference papers and conference proceedings.

Business Development
Business Development in the HSRC takes into account strategic HSRC objectives, such as extending the organisation's funding base by means of external contracts and grants, reaching out to potential collaborators and stakeholders through our research work, and responding to user needs. The HSRC Business Development facility provides support to researchers in the HSRC to reach these objectives.
Services available from the Business Development facility include the following:
- Environmental scanning: Informing researchers of new tenders and funding opportunities.
- Administrative and logistical support with the preparation, packaging and delivery of funding proposals.
- Advisory services with regard to research contracts with clients and service providers.
- Summarised information on submitted and successful funding proposals.
